Alain Robbe-Grillet (August 18, 1922 – February 18, 2008) was a writer who, in works such as Le Voyeur (The Voyeur, 1955), La jalousie (Jealousy, 1957) and Dans le labyrinthe (In the Labyrinth, 1959) pioneered “Le Nouvelle Roman” or “New Novel”, which dispensed with traditional narrative conventions in favour of recurring images, precisely described physical objects and the random events of everyday life. He also wrote screenplays, most notably for Alain Resnais’ L’Année derniére a Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad, 1961), and later directed a number of films himself including L’immortelle (The Immortal One, 1963), Trans-Europ-Express (1966), and L’homme qui ment (The Man Who Lies, 1968). |
