Yves Montand (13 October, 1921 – 9 November, 1991) was a popular singer and actor, idolized in France as both an entertainer and as the epitome of a certain kind of tough but charming Gallic archetype. He appeared in more than 50 films, including Henri-George Cluzot’s classic thriller
The Wages of Fear (1953), key New Wave films by
Alain Resnais (
La Guerre est finie, 1966) and
Jean-Luc Godard (
Tout va bien, 1976) and in his 60s,
Jean de Florette and
Manon des sources (1986), which won him his greatest international acclaim.
